If you’re an Enneagram Type Four trying to figure out whether you’re a 4w3 or a 4w5, you’re in the right place. In this guide, we’ll break down the key differences between 4w3 vs 4w4, including traits, strengths, and how each wing influences your personality. By the end, you’ll have a much clearer sense of how you use your wings in everyday life!

Quick Summary

If you only have 30 seconds, here’s the gist:

  • 4w3 (“The Aristocrat” / “The Enthusiast”) Creative + driven. Emotional + image‑aware. A blend of authenticity and ambition.
  • 4w5 (“The Bohemian” / “The Free Spirit”) Creative + introspective. Emotional + cerebral. A blend of depth and detachment.
  • Both wings shape how your Type Four energy expresses itself: outward and goal‑oriented (3) or inward and contemplative (5).

What Are Enneagram Wings?

Wings are the two numbers directly beside your core type on the Enneagram symbol. For Type Fours, your wings are:

  • Type 3
  • Type 5

Most people lean more heavily on one wing; that’s your dominant wing. It adds flavor, nuance, and texture to your core Type Four personality.

The 4w3 is a fascinating blend of emotional depth (4) and achievement‑oriented drive (3). They’re often energetic, creative, practical, and surprisingly ambitious.

The Inner Conflict of the 4w3

Type Fours crave authenticity. Type Threes crave accomplishment and external validation.

Put them together, and you get a person who wants to be deeply true to themselves… while also wanting to be admired for it. This can create an internal tug‑of‑war:

  • “Be real.”
  • “Be impressive.”
  • “But also be real while being impressive.”
  • “But don’t try too hard because that’s inauthentic.”
  • “But also succeed.”

It’s a bit of a tug-of-war.

(But keep in mind: wings are only a FLAVORING of your personality. Your core motivations—what make you an Enneagram Four in the first place—are way more indicative of who you are than your wings. So if you’re not sure what your main type is yet, don’t worry about wings. (And also, please check out subtypes. They are so incredibly helpful.)

Why 4w3s Are Magical

4w3s don’t just dream up beautiful things — they do them. They bring vibrant, original ideas into the world and have the motivation to execute them.

This creativity isn’t limited to traditional art. It shows up in:

  • inventive problem‑solving
  • fresh philosophies
  • open-minded thinking
  • aesthetic vision
  • inclusive leadership

4w3s make the world more bearable and beautiful because they turn their inner world into something others can experience.

4w5: The Bohemian / The Free Spirit

The 4w5 is a blend of emotional depth (4) and intellectual depth (5). Both types are withdrawn, which means this wing pairing often retreats inward to protect their emotions and inner resources.

The Inner Landscape of the 4w5

When struggling, 4w5s may:

  • self‑isolate
  • refuse help
  • get lost in emotional or existential spirals
  • retreat into their imagination or research
  • feel misunderstood (and also kind of like that feeling)

They are wise, introspective, and deeply original.

A Real‑Life Example

My husband Jon is a 4w5, and one of my favorite things about him is the depth he brings to conversations. There is no topsoil — it’s all roots. He brings nuance, thoughtfulness, and emotional intelligence to every interaction.

That’s the gift of the 4w5: They bring depth, beauty, and meaning into the world simply by being themselves.

Intuitive Ways to Know Your Dominant Wing

If you’re a 4w3, you might…

  • care (secretly or not‑so‑secretly) about how others perceive you
  • feel torn between authenticity and achievement
  • have bursts of ambition
  • enjoy performing, sharing, or being seen
  • express your creativity outwardly

If you’re a 4w5, you might…

  • need more alone time than most humans
  • retreat into your inner world
  • love researching your interests
  • express your creativity privately or abstractly
  • go down rabbit holes when you get interested in something

And a quick note: You have access to BOTH of your wings. Everyone is a unique combination of their main type and sprinklings of their neighbor types. Some people find that they have balanced wings or no wings at all, but most people find themselves relying more heavily on one wing than the other. So if somedays you feel more like a 4w5, but others you find you’re more of a 4w3, that’s normal!
