Top 10 Trust-Building Ways to Support Your Type Six Partner
In this blog, I’m giving you the SECRET SAUCE for loving the Enneagram Six in your life. Sixes need support and security in a relationship, but there can be a lot of roadblocks when there isn’t a solid foundation of trust! I hope that you come out of this post with ten practical tools to help you strengthen your relationship.
#10. Be a Consistent Source of Security

Sixes want security and support—and they fear losing those things more than anything.
Show love by being:
- consistent
- reliable
- steady in your words and actions (basically: do what you say you’re going to do!)
When you follow through, you help them relax into the relationship.
Make your actions and words a sure thing.
#9. Use Humor to Bring Lightness

Sixes are hilarious. They love joking around and lightening the mood. But when anxiety hits, their humor can disappear. Don’t brush off their fears, of course, but if the time calls for it, lighten the mood.
This is where you come in:
- be silly
- tell a joke
- create a goofy character
- bring levity without dismissing their fears
Do a weird character you’ve invented. For example, I was stressed out about those little earwig bugs because I was finding them in my apartment and I hate bugs. So my husband and I created an earwig character who talks really funny and just wants to be a part of the group. That brought a levity and joy to a situation that was gross and stressful! Now, I’m honestly excited to see an earwig because then I can take a video of it and do the voice to send to my husband!
Laughter helps a Six loosen their grip on worst‑case scenarios.
#8. Help Them Believe in Themselves

A stereotype I’ve seen on Instagram is that Sixes are always everyone’s biggest fan. Their “label” is the Loyalist. They support everyone.
But most of the time, the one person that the Six is not supporting is themselves. They don’t trust themselves, they don’t believe in themselves, they think poorly of themselves.
This is where you come in.
When you see that they are doubting themselves, bring up past experiences where your Six trusted themselves and created something fantastic! Remind them of a time where they took the lead, and it worked! Help your Six be their own biggest fan.
How to Build a Six’s Self‑Trust
- Remind them of past successes
- Point out moments where they led with confidence
- Celebrate times they trusted themselves, and it worked
This helps them rewrite their internal narrative.
Their doubt is loud! So be the voice that helps them remember their own competence.
#7. Respect Their Questions

Sixes ask a lot of questions. They are methodical, perceptive, and they ask questions to get the full picture. Once they’ve collected all the information, they feel reassured and ready to take action.
Their questions help them:
- feel secure
- understand the full picture
- prepare for action
For some Enneagram types, this thoughtful questioning can be confusing and irritating. You just want to get it done! But understand that there is value in a Six’s methodical nature, and it actually benefits us as a collective. I talk more about that in this YouTube video, if you’re interested in learning more about communicating with a Type Six in this way.
Honoring their process builds trust.
#6. Offer Extra Support During Anxiety

When stressed, Sixes can become:
- highly anxious
- hypervigilant
- pessimistic
- terrified of failure
Support looks like:
- going on a walk
- listening calmly
- bringing positivity
- offering grounding presence
This helps them regulate and reconnect.
“I know that when I’m feeling anxious, it’s really helpful for my partner to give me extra love and support.” — A Type Six
#5. Show Them You’re Here for the Long Haul
Sticking with a Six through thick and thin is their definition of love. When times get tough, it’s important for a Six to feel that you will always be there. Creating a mutual understanding of trust can do wonders for a relationship because the Six doesn’t need to worry about the longevity of the relationship.

When conflict arises:
- reassure them you’re not going anywhere
- remind them that disagreement doesn’t equal instability
- emphasize the longevity of the relationship
This helps them feel safe enough to stay present.
Your steady presence is the proof a Six needs that the relationship is built to last.

#3. Encourage Action Over Overthinking

Sixes can procrastinate by planning TOO much. When they overthink, they can get bogged down in the details and never actually act on anything. Encourage your Six to ACT.
Help them:
- take small steps
- act before everything feels “perfect”
- break tasks into manageable pieces
This builds confidence and momentum.
For an Enneagram 6, action is the antidote to the anxiety spiral.
#2. Give Reassurance (Kindly and Calmly)

Sixes, more than any other number, need reassurance.
Common questions they ask:
- “Are we good?”
- “Do you still love me?”
- “Do you still want to be with me?”
I know this can be annoying, but offer calm, kind reassurance—and help them explore where the fear is coming from.
Ask them if you’ve ever given them a reason to doubt your relationship. Make them dig deep into where these fears are coming from. It’s usually not really about you.
For a Six, steady reassurance isn’t neediness—it’s their way of protecting themselves.
#1. Share a Grounding Mantra

In the book “The Road Back To You,” Cron and Stabile propose a helpful mantra for a type 6 to repeat. It’s a prayer by Julian of Norwich, and it goes like this:
“All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.”
Put it on a post‑it. Stick it on their mirror. Encourage them to meditate on it.
